Agreed on the something lacking at the outdoor vs. indoor/night shows. What I liked about summer daytime venues was the festival atmosphere.

I seem to remember reading that the 60's shows a projector with soapy water was used to create trippy effects.

Soapy water or something like that. Primitive, but it did the trick.

In the 40 years I've been attending concerts I've never seen any light show that beats the old liquid light shows that were popular in the late 60's at places like Winterland. Period.
Just my opinion.

ever see the backdrop for the Airplane that's on the 30 seconds over winterland LP? Pretty damn impressive for 72 or whenever it was.

johnny-
much later in the day and I'm back online for a few minutes. For the life of me I cannot remember what that 30 Seconds Over Winterland banner looked like and cannot find a picture anywhere despite a fairly exhaustive google. Would you mind describing it?
Thanks.

those pics rasta posted are of the FRONT cover. The back cover has the band in concert with a back drop. The back drop has pictures of rockets and planets and such and is like a collage of real pictures and art, it's not the oil and paint water thing. I can't describe it but it looks like a Santana cover but I forgot which one. Wish I could find a pic.

more like the one where the guy or god or whatever it is has his hand all extended. But it's not exactly like that, just a reference. Wish I could find a pic

Hi Johnny - I'll try to take a shot of the back of my copy of the album and put it up later.

In small print on the back it says:

'Toasters appear courtesy of the G.D. 'quippies, by way of Garcia, Parrish, J.A. and Steinberg'

cool. Apparantly there was a big controversy on the copywrite of the toasters that went on for a long time.

They were used as an early Macintosh screensaver weren't they? As I recall the Airplane lost the copyright battle because being a bunch of hippies they never registered the image.

Anyway - here's a pic of sorts of the back cover. And yes - that's me holding it up and hiding behind it!

So far (several minutes) that attachment isn't working, but is the picture of the flying toasters what was used as the backdrop?
